The Republican Party of Minnesota published a statement on social media Thursday evening saying that its previous chair hired local political pundit Michael Brodkorb’s company for consulting services following Brodkorb’s endorsement of DFL Gov. Tim Walz for reelection in 2022.
The organization’s new chair, Alex Plechash, was elected in December to lead the state party, beating out incumbent chair David Hann.
In an email to members of the state party and in a post on X, Plechash said Brodkorb’s company was apparently used by the Republican Party of Minnesota to help with “podcast creation, communication strategy and public relations work.”
Plechash did not mention Hann by name, but referred to “the prior administration” as having contracted with an entity operated by Brodkorb “to do work on behalf of the Minnesota Republican Party.”
That entity is called the 1972-10 Company, LLC, which federal campaign finance records show received roughly $30,000 from the Republican Party of Minnesota between September 2023 to March 2024. The records list a Wyoming address for the company.
Alpha News has asked the Minnesota GOP for a copy of the contract and for more specific details on the services provided, but the party declined to comment beyond its public statement. Brodkorb, when reached by email, declined to comment.
In 2022, Brodkorb, who was once deputy chair of the Republican Party of Minnesota, endorsed Gov. Walz for reelection over Republican candidate Dr. Scott Jensen. He also endorsed Republicans Jim Schultz and Ryan Wilson in 2022.
In 2024, Brodkorb endorsed Kamala Harris and Walz over Donald Trump in the presidential race, and promoted that endorsement as part of a “Republicans for Harris” movement.
On Thursday, Plechash said his impetus for revealing the prior contract was related to “recent threats by an unaffiliated and rogue group, Action 4 Liberty, to release internal information without context or regard for the facts.”
“There have been questions from both the media and Republicans across the state about who the prior administration contracted with to do work on behalf of the Minnesota Republican Party,” Plechash said in the statement.
“Based on multiple endorsed checks and a recently obtained copy of the contract, we can confirm that Michael Brodkorb executed the contract and signed the checks,” he continued. “This information is being shared in the spirit of transparency and accountability. Our party must be honest about the past as we work to build a stronger, more unified future. I am committed to making sure supporters like you are informed directly and truthfully—without spin and without the distractions of those seeking to divide us.”
In recent weeks the state party and Action 4 Liberty have been trading barbs via press statements and on social media.
