Just weeks after a mob attack at an Edina YMCA left a student with a traumatic brain injury, another alleged assault by a group took place at a YMCA in Minneapolis.
Minneapolis police were dispatched Thursday just after 7:30 p.m. to the YMCA on the 3300 block of Blaisdell Avenue South in Minneapolis on a report of an assault involving up to 20 juveniles. The suspects were reported to be wielding belts and shovels, according to initial police scanner audio. The 911 caller apparently relayed that the group was targeting another juvenile, and that the suspects ran out at one point and returned with more objects. One juvenile was reported to have been hit in the head and was bleeding.
Video later obtained by Crime Watch Minneapolis appears to show the incident from the attackers’ point of view. (Local youth have been known to record their antics and post videos on social media).

A group of males in hoodies can be seen in the video running into and through the YMCA until they reach the basketball gym; some can be seen carrying objects like bats or poles. Some of the individuals appear to target a young person in the gym, one of them wielding what appears to be a bat. The jittery video then shows the group running back out of the building and through the parking lot while screaming and yelling.
Police subsequently arrived at the scene but did not indicate that any suspects had been located.
Further dispatch audio indicated that an approximately 15-year-old boy was transported to the hospital with injuries after being struck multiple times in the head with a metal baseball bat. Details about his condition were not available.
The Minneapolis Police Department has not issued a public statement about the incident, and information was not immediately available on whether any arrests have been made.
At the end of December, a 16-year-old boy was left with a traumatic brain injury after being attacked by a mob in a similar fashion at the Edina YMCA basketball court. Edina police subsequently announced the arrest of six teen suspects in that attack, ranging in age from 14 to 17. At least one of the suspects was subsequently charged with felony counts of third-degree riot and third-degree assault; the other suspects were reported at the time to have similar charges pending, according to a follow-up statement by Edina PD. All parties in that incident were reported to be students at Edina High School.
