A Minneapolis homeless encampment was cleared Monday night after a large fight ended in the shooting of a 33-year-old man, police said.

According to a press release, Third Precinct police officers responded to the 3300 block of 3rd Avenue South just after 5 p.m. and found the man lying on the sidewalk. He was transported to Hennepin Healthcare where he later died.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicates that a large fight broke out inside the encampment and then spilled out onto the street, which is when the shooting occurred. The injured man walked down the sidewalk and collapsed, police said. The encampment was later cleared.

“The loss of life resulting from someone resorting to gun violence during an altercation has impacted yet another neighborhood in Minneapolis,” said Chief Brian O’Hara. “This senseless loss of life is a harsh reminder of the violence that continues to be all too common. I am thankful that this encampment was cleared before additional violent crime could occur in that neighborhood.”

Alpha News reporter Liz Collin spoke with homeowners near the encampment last week. They said they repeatedly called on the city to take action after witnessing drug deals, overdoses, and theft but received no response.
