Minnesota’s capital city has now reached 40 homicides in one year for the first time on record.

St. Paul achieved the grim milestone just before midnight Tuesday when a man was found dead in an alleyway on the 500 block of Lawson Avenue West in the North End neighborhood.

This is the second consecutive year of record homicides in St. Paul. Last year, the city reported 38 murders. That number was surpassed on Dec. 19 when Lashonda Nix, a 40-year-old mother of four, was found shot in the head in a home on the 600 block of Cook Avenue East, according to KARE 11.

St. Paul tied its 1992 record of 34 homicides in 2020.
