A Burnsville High School student is facing two felony charges for bringing a firearm to school last week, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced.

Alonzo Williams Jr. was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on school property and possession of a firearm by an ineligible person, since he is under 18.

According to Keena’s office:

Police responded to a report of a firearm at Burnsville High School on April 2 around 10:45 a.m.

School officials were alerted to the situation earlier that morning by students who witnessed Williams filming a video of himself with a gun in a school bathroom.

Williams was taken to the dean’s office and a gun was found in his backpack. Police identified the gun as a Sig Sauer handgun with a fully loaded magazine containing 21, 9 mm rounds.

Williams told police that he purchased the gun from an unknown male for protection at school. He is not accused of threatening any students.

Williams was taken to the Juvenile Services Center Thursday for a detention hearing. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 16.

“I’m grateful for the Burnsville Police Department’s quick and timely response to this incident,” said Keena. “I also commend how the staff members at Burnsville High School immediately reacted to the situation.”
