Minnesota Democrats have a higher view of Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan than Congresswoman Angie Craig, according to new polling data. Flanagan and Craig are currently opponents in a heated DFL primary for U.S. Senate.
Conducted by The Tarrance Group from May 13-17, the new poll surveyed 514 likely Minnesota voters and had a margin of error of 4.5%. The Tarrance Group has previously conducted polls for state Republican parties, governors, and members of Congress.
Of the 514 people surveyed for the poll, 77% said they were “extremely likely” to vote in the upcoming November general election. Another 15.7% of respondents were “very likely” to vote, and the final 7.2% were “somewhat likely” to vote.
The new poll was shared exclusively with Alpha News.
Flanagan outperforms Craig with all likely voters
According to the survey, 15.5% of all 514 respondents had a “strongly favorable” opinion of Craig, and 18.8% had a “somewhat favorable” view of her. In total, 34.3% of likely voters expressed a favorable opinion of the congresswoman.
Meanwhile, 27.2% of those polled had a “strongly unfavorable” view of Craig, and 10.8% had a “somewhat unfavorable” view of her. In total, 38% expressed an unfavorable opinion of Craig. As such, her favorability rating is underwater by almost four points.
However, 13.3% of respondents had “no opinion” of Craig while another 14.4% had never heard of her.
When asked about Flanagan, 21.9% of all 514 likely voters had a “strongly favorable” view of the lieutenant governor. Another 16.5% had a “somewhat favorable” view of Flanagan. In total, 38.4% of likely voters expressed a favorable opinion of the lieutenant governor.
Conversely, 23.4% of respondents had a “strongly unfavorable” opinion of Flanagan, and 6.6% had a “somewhat unfavorable” view. In total, 30% expressed an unfavorable opinion of the lieutenant governor. As such, she has a net favorability rating of +8.4.
Additionally, 15.9% of likely voters had “no opinion” of Flanagan, and 15.7% had never heard of her.
Flanagan has favorability advantage with Democrats
Flanagan also outperforms Craig amongst Democrats who were surveyed for the Tarrance Group poll. According to the survey, 66% of Democrats expressed a favorable opinion of Flanagan compared to 55% who expressed a favorable opinion of Craig.
Meanwhile, 22% of Democrats expressed an unfavorable opinion of Craig while only 10% of Democrats expressed an unfavorable opinion of Flanagan.
As a result, Flanagan has a +56 favorability rating with Democrats, and Craig has a +33 favorability rating with the same group. Flanagan’s 23-point favorability lead with DFLers is certain to help her in her campaign against Craig.
At present, Craig and Flanagan are running for an open Minnesota seat in the U.S. Senate. On Wednesday, Craig announced she would not seek the DFL endorsement for Senate and will instead head straight to the August primary election.
Given this, Flanagan will almost certainly win the DFL endorsement this weekend.
While Flanagan has the support of many prominent left-wing figures and appears to have more support with grassroots DFLers, Craig has maintained a significant fundraising advantage over Flanagan.
